Periscope House: innovation and sustainability with mirrors underground

Claerhout – Van Biervliet Architects has created a revolutionary project in Knokke-Heist, Belgium: Periscope House, a residence located underground that challenges the traditional conventions of architectural design. This project, focused on sustainability and energy efficiency, combines innovative materials and advanced technology, setting a new standard in modern architecture.  

The design of Periscope House is fully subterranean, which presents common challenges such as lack of natural light and limited views. However, the main innovation of this residence lies in the use of movable mirrors arranged at 45-degree angles, which work as periscopes. 

During the day, these mirrors are raised to capture natural light and panoramic views, maximizing the luminosity of the living spaces. This system allows enjoying the exterior views without compromising the privacy or functionality of the home. 

The submerged central courtyard, along with the surrounding outdoor spaces, also contributes to space optimization and thermal insulation. Being underground, the house maintains a stable temperature, reducing the need for artificial air conditioning systems. In addition, the design minimizes the visual impact of the building on the landscape, allowing the house to blend harmoniously with its coastal surroundings.

One of the most innovative aspects of Periscope House is its sustainable approach. The mirrors reflect light and provide views and function as containers for plants, integrating vegetation directly into the house’s structure. This inclusion of natural elements helps reduce the building’s carbon footprint and improves the air quality of the outdoor and indoor spaces. 

The mirrors include solar-powered motors that allow them to be raised and lowered without the need for additional electricity. This technology optimizes the use of natural light, while it generates energy through a gravity battery system. 

By lowering the mirrors at night, mechanical energy is stored and can be transformed into electricity for everyday use. This innovative solution is evidence of how green architecture can use renewable energy and advanced technologies to minimize its environmental impact. 

Innovation in subterranean architecture

On the contrary, Periscope House uses innovative technology to enhance the living conditions of the spaces below ground.
